Flying Soon? 10 Items You Should Never Put in Checked Luggage

This is precisely why aviation bodies, airlines and security agencies have advised the travellers to think before checking-in baggage.

No matter whether you travel within the country or outside, there are certain items that are barred from check in luggage. Moreover, these items can create safety risks. They may also violate certain rules and leave you stranded at the destination if your luggage does not arrive on time.

Here is a list of those Items you should never put in checked luggage:

1. Power Storage Devices

This is probably the most common mistake done by travellers.

Any type of batteries (type lithium-ion) is what typically comprise power banks.  Power banks are often banned from checked baggage because damaged batteries can overheat and/or catch fire.  Airport authorities have mandated a policy that requires passengers to pack their power banks in cabin baggage.

2. Extra Batteries.

Not only power storage batteries but checked baggage must not also include camera batteries, drone batteries, laptop batteries and any loose batteries.

Lithium batteries are a fire hazard and usually must be carried in hand baggage, protected from short circuiting.

3. Laptops and Other Pricey Electronics.

Although airlines may permit certain aspects in checked baggage with restrictions, travel experts advise you to keep them in your possession. Laptops, tablets, cameras and hard drives are always safer in cabin baggage. Even Smart luggage that have non-removable batteries are not allowed. Before you travel, check airline policies.

Reasons includes

•          Threat to possession.

•          Concerns regarding battery safety.

•          Security of data.

4. Passport and Travel Papers.

While this may sound obvious, airport personnel often come across passengers who mistakenly check in their passports, visas, boarding papers, or identity cards.

Always maintain.

  • Travel Document
    • Identification Card
    • Visa documentation.
    • Flight tickets.
    • Papers for travel insurance, inside your own bag.

5. Medicines Also Included Are Medical devices

If you take a medication every day, don’t put it in checked luggage. You may end up without your important medications due to late flights, baggage problems, missed connections, etc. Carry your medical prescription for notable medication like inhalers, nose sprays etc. in your carry-on luggage.

6. Jewellery and Valuable items.

Checking on expensive valuables like jewellery, watches, money, important papers/documents aren’t recommended by airlines. The reason- Many airline compensation policies do not cover high-value items.

7. E-cigarettes and vapes.

Most travellers are unaware that e-cigarettes and vapes have lithium batteries.

International aviation regulations typically mandate that these items be placed in cabin baggage rather than checked baggage. Different countries and airlines have different rules.

8. Inflammable & perishable items

Any type of fireworks, aerosol or gasoline items are prohibited in check in luggage. Also food that can perish en-route are not allowed. Household items likes bleach, spray paints, chlorine etc is also prohibited.

9. Keychains, Badges and Essential Personal Items.

In many cases, travelers realize just a tad too late that their house keys, car keys, wallet or important contacts are inside checked baggage.

Always keep important things within reach while traveling.
