From Venice gondola rides to Bali’s floating breakfast, discover five popular travel experiences that many travellers say aren’t worth the price—and better alternatives to try instead.
In the era of Instagram and Facebook every destination and those must visit attractions looks so attractive that every travel enthusiast promises to get there one day. But not every Tourist destination and iconic activity is as cool as you think. Most of them are overhyped. Some of them have such high costs, long waiting time, and inflated expectations that when you finally experience the same you face such a letdown making a person wonder if it was worth it.
There are many attractions or spots that’s really don’t measure up. So, in this blog we are sharing some of those travel experiences form the reviews of seasoned travellers which we think are overrated. Now its up to your individual choice to go or not to go, but knowing which ones we think aren’t worth it (and which are) can at least help you manage expectations.
1. A Gondola Ride in Venice, Italy.
Although being on a gondola in Venice might sound very romantic, that’s not the case. Most rides will set you back about €90–€120 (30 min) In addition, during peak season, gondolas move along congested waterways full of other boats.
Instead: Discover Venice on foot, venture through its quieter backstreets or take a vaporetto (public water bus). You can still savour the delightful canals of the lovely city.
2. The floating tray Breakfast in Bali, Indonesia
Individuals who travel for leisure have said that the luxury travel trend of floating breakfasts is not as glamorous as it seems. The dream-like scene of enjoying breakfast afloat has been made popular by social media reels. What’s in reality you do is just spend time in taking pictures rather than enjoying breakfast. Also in tropical areas, the food gets cold fast; insects gather around the pool; So a complete NO..NO.. from our side.
Instead we recommend a traditional Balinese breakfast with scenic rice terrace views, or perhaps eating in a local café overlooking mountains or the jungle.
3. The popular hot air balloon rides in Cappadocia, Turkey
It is wonderful to see colourful balloons flying over the sky of Cappadocia. Still, a ride in one of it will cost you US$250–US$350 or more, plus you are required to get there on early-morning and usually involves a packed/crowded basket of other tourists.
Instead: enjoy the Cappadocia’s viewpoint during sunrise which is breathtaking! Even without the price tag, you will witness the same balloon-filled skies.
4. The Eiffel Tower Summit, Paris France.
While many would dream of taking a ticket to the top of the Eiffel Tower, many have to wait a long time before they get there. Once on the upper floors, much of the view is seen through glass and the live experience is often rushed.
Instead: Try the Arc de Triomphe, the Montparnasse Tower or Sacré-Cœur instead for views that include the Eiffel Tower itself.
5. Swimming with Sharks in the Bahamas!
There are some cases in which animal welfare worries arise. The cameras take precedence over responsible tourism in these instances. Wildlife baiting or disrupting the natural behaviours of the animals in the water can lead to condemnation of shark-swimming.
Choose accredited ecotourism operators that advocate the principles of responsible wildlife or observe marine flora and fauna from the deck on a snorkel and reef cruise.
Be Wise While Travelling.
Just because something costs a lot doesn’t make it special. Prior to booking, always check recent reviews, look for alternative places, and ask yourself why you are choosing the place in the first place – is it for the experience or just for the social media. The most beautiful travel memories often happen while wandering around local markets, scouting for hidden cafés, chatting with residents, or finding views that are not on Instagram.
Sometimes, the most rewarding one stays off the beaten path.
