Think Your Heart Is Healthy? This One Blood Test Could Reveal a Hidden Risk You Never Knew You Had

Good and bad cholesterol aren’t the complete story. Here’s why cardiologists recommend a once-in-a-lifetime Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) test to identify inherited heart disease risk.

A heart attack was one of the most common health troubles faced by people in India and the world at large through 2025. Many of those affected did not fit the description of a typical heart attack patient. It was especially concerning as most of these cases were young people. Moreover, they were all active and didn’t have any warning signs. Some people trained regularly. The remaining ones had no smoking or obesity history. Nevertheless, they still experienced serious heart problems.

It has led to many wanting to know an important thing – if my cholesterol level is normal, am I at a reduced risk of heart issues?

Not necessarily.

According to cardiologists, there is another blood marker that gets neglected as it is not part of a health check-up. Lipoprotein(a), also known as Lp(a) Although most people may be unaware of it, experts now advise every adult to get this test just once in their lifetime.

What Is Lp(a)?

Lp(a) is basically a cholesterol particle that most of us have due to our genes.

Your Lp(a) level is largely inherited, unlike your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, which benefits from a healthier diet and regular exercise. When cholesterol levels are high, they can lead to build-up of fat deposits in your arteries over time which can raise risk of heart attacks and strokes.

It is possible to have normal cholesterol levels and still have high Lp(a). The catch is that you can have normal cholesterol levels, and still have high Lp(a).

That is why many doctors now view it as an essential missing piece of the heart health puzzle.

What makes it different from a regular cholesterol test?

Most standard lipid profiles include.

  • Cholesterol level
  • Low-density lipoprotein
  • High-density lipoprotein.
  • Fat.

Lp(a) is usually omitted. It involves a different blood test, which is why so many people don’t know their levels unless a doctor tells them.

Who Should Be Considered for Testing?

All adults should at least check their Lp(a) level ( done once in a lifetime) , according to updated heart-health guidelines.

The examination turns out significant if even.

  • A close relation of yours suffered from an early heart attack or stroke.
  • Family members experience high cholesterol or heart disease.
  • Although your cholesterol levels are normal, you have a family history of heart problems.
  • You want the full picture of your heart health over the long term.

Please Note: It is really important for Indians because south Asians are at a higher risk of developing heart disease at a younger age compared to many other groups of people.

What occurs if your lp(a) is high?

A high score does not indicate you will have a heart attack.

That doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do, either.

While you won’t significantly lower your Lp(a) itself, diet and exercise are still two of the most powerful means by which to cut your overall risk for heart disease.  Tight control of risk factors like LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, etc. may also be required as per your doctor. Research is underway on treatments specifically targeting Lp(a), which may also be widely available in the near future.

Prevention Starts With Knowledge

We often wait until symptoms appear before paying attention to our health. But heart disease doesn’t always announce itself in advance.

A simple blood test can’t predict the future, but it can reveal whether you carry a hidden inherited risk that routine cholesterol reports may miss.

So, the next time you schedule a preventive health check-up, don’t just ask whether your cholesterol is normal. Ask your doctor whether a Lipoprotein(a) test is right for you.

Sometimes, the most valuable health test is the one you never knew existed.
