Karan Johar’s Manish Malhotra Cape at Met Gala 2026 Was a Moving Canvas of Indian Art

Called the Fashion Guru in Bollywood, Director Producer Karan Johar never makes a quiet entrance anywhere. Talking about his grand entry at the Met Gala, the fashionista arrived in a dramatic Manish Malhotra creation that instantly looked different from a typical red-carpet outfit. The sweeping cape, the artwork and the sheer scale of the ensemble made it feel less like something you simply wear and more like a painting that moves with you.

For the 2026 Met Gala, themed “Costume Art” with the dress code “Fashion is Art,” Johar wore a custom Manish Malhotra creation titled “Framed in Eternity.” That Cape Stole the Show  The first thing you notice is the cape. It is huge, floor-length and impossible to miss. But there was much more to it than creating a dramatic entrance. The cape was hand-painted and embroidered with imagery inspired by Raja Ravi Varma, one of India’s most celebrated painters. Swans, lotuses and other classic Indian elements appear across the artwork, giving the garment the feel of a traditional painting brought to life. Underneath, Johar wore a sharply tailored black jacket and trousers. The dark, structured outfit worked almost like a frame, allowing the artwork on the cape to remain the star. And as Johar walked, the cape moved behind him, revealing different parts of the artwork. That’s what made the “moving canvas” description feel so appropriate. Why Raja Ravi Varma?  The choice of Raja Ravi Varma wasn’t simply about adding an Indian reference to an international fashion event. Varma’s paintings have had a lasting influence on how generations have imagined Indian beauty, mythology and femininity. His work brought Indian subjects into a visual language that remains recognisable even today. Malhotra took that artistic vocabulary and moved it from the canvas to couture. The result connected 19th-century Indian art with contemporary fashion, without making the Indian influence feel like an afterthought. Johar has also spoken about his admiration for Varma and the lasting images of India created through his work. 5,600 Hours Went Into This One Look  Here’s the part that is easy to miss when looking at the finished photograph. According to Vogue, more than 80 artisans worked for around 5,600 hours over 86 days to create the ensemble. There was hand painting, embroidery, zardozi, three-dimensional detailing and even a hand-painted lining inside the jacket. So while the final Met Gala photograph may look effortless, the outfit represents months of painstaking work carried out long before Johar ever stepped onto the carpet. More Than a Red-Carpet Moment  That’s perhaps what makes the look interesting.  Met Gala fashion is expected to be dramatic, but drama alone doesn’t necessarily make an outfit memorable. Johar’s ensemble had something underneath all that spectacle—a story. The cape wasn’t just there to make an entrance. It carried artwork, history and craftsmanship with it. Every time it moved, another detail became visible. And importantly, the outfit didn’t try to make Indian art look “international” by stripping away what made it Indian. It took those references straight to one of fashion’s biggest global stages. For Karan Johar, the Met Gala was therefore about more than wearing a Manish Malhotra creation. He arrived wearing a piece of Indian art history—and let it move.
