The “Just Looking Like a Wow” Trend Bollywood Still Can’t Let Go Of

There are these internet phrases that vanish almost before you can process them. Then there are those phrases that stick around, long after their moment has passed.

“Just looking like a wow” is one such meme lines. What started off as an expression uttered by a woman entrepreneur selling woman clothing online has now graduated to Instagram captions, celebrity replies, fashion reels and the reason you’ll frequently see two people comment on each other’s posts.

Bollywood, naturally, hasn’t been immune to the trend either.

“Just looking like a wow”: From Viral Line to Fashion Lingo

The popularity of the phrase began with a viral social media video which instantly turned an oddly worded compliment into a widely-recognisable catchphrase. Add to that, it wasn’t the most grammatically correct construction and the entire thing was a hit.

“Just looking like a wow” is an exuberant, slightly off-the-cuff line that fits perfectly in a social-media-friendly setting. Not long after it first gained fame, it began cropping up for everything from wedding ensembles to makeup makeovers, to celebrity airport style.

The phrase also fit perfectly with the kind of fashion dialogue we engage with now: a celebrity posts an image, the comments section fills up and suddenly, a certain look is the topic of conversation.

Bollywood Joins the “Just Looking Like a Wow” Bandwagon

Bollywood celebrities, for their part, rarely need a specific occasion to make a fashion moment their content.

Whether it’s **Alia Bhatt** in a “normal” saree, **Janhvi Kapoor** experimenting with a rather drastic look, **Priyanka Chopra Jonas** serving a red carpet ensemble or **Kareena Kapoor Khan** keeping it effortlessly chic, celebrity Instagram posts are micro fashion events of their own.

The “just looking like a wow” vernacular also fits right into this culture, since it doesn’t attempt to come off as a fashion critic. Instead, it’s simply how a lot of people end up reacting when they come across a really good celebrity look.

And, in turn, it’s relatable.

If you don’t know the designer or can’t quite put a label on the couture or fabric, it doesn’t matter.

Just Looking Like a Wow”: Why Has the Phrase Stuck Around?

The internet moves fast, but phrases tend to stick when people are actually using them outside the context of an online conversation.

“Just looking like a wow” works well as a caption or comment, but also makes for a meme, or reel audio, or even a WhatsApp message to your friend who’s overdressed for your wedding.

It’s also a phrase that has managed to bridge a pretty clear age divide: Instagram younger users adopted it very quickly, but the phrase also gained some followers in the older social media demographic, mainly because it’s fun, easy and instantly understandable.

Above all, the phrase is easy to say because it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Bollywood’s Latest Fashion Vocabulary

Celebrity fashion has always been a great creator of catchphrases and while they’ve always moved around, social media has sped up the process.

Where a designer outfit once showed up the next day in a magazine, a celebrity Instagram post now has the potential to garner a few thousand reactions within a few hours.

They’re not really so much about describing a celebrity look, as they are about reacting to it.

And, in some ways, that’s the reason why Bollywood hasn’t quite given up on the trend yet. Because while fashion can be aspirational, niche, expensive and at times really, really curated, sometimes, the simplest response is the best one:
