When it comes to vacations, the Indian youth have long favoured beach destinations, hill stations and activity-packed trips. But 2026 could bring change. Indian youth are increasingly traveling to India’s heritage cities not just to see monuments, but to soak up culture through food, local streets, festivals and stories.
Data from Indian travel companies has started to reflect this. Heritage cities and homes accounted for 14.9% of Zostel’s bookings in FY 2025–26, the highest three-year share. Its bookings for heritage properties also increased from 67,788 in FY 2023–24 to 83,235 in FY 2025–26. (The Times of India)Â

Young travellers are viewing heritage through a new lens. They’re likely spending less time sightseeing and more time enjoying a cocktail of experiences unique to each city. This can include watching the evening Ganga aarti, taking photos of old havelis, eating local street food and spending days exploring what locals know about their city. They are engaging themselves with culture, wellness and self-exploration. India is increasingly popular among young travellers who seek its bustling markets, iconic cuisine and majestic ghats.

Varanasi
Sprawling temples, narrow alleyways lined with souvenir shops, music drifting from nearby temples and the uniquely Indian experience of eating chai and pakoras by the riverside. For many, this is the closest they’ll get to ancient India.
According to 2026 travel trends, there has been a surge of interest in Varanasi with the city ranking high in domestic accommodation searches. Searches for luxury properties in Varanasi have also increased.
Varanasi gives travellers something for everyone. Visitors often mix shopping for vinyl records along Ghats with pilgrimages to the temples of Assi Ghat. Sunrise by the Ganga, a walk through Varanasi’s old city and street food, followed by an evening watching the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat can all be done in a single trip.
Udaipur
A heritage city with a splash of luxury, Udaipur is known for its blend of royal-style hotels, scenic lakes and heritage tourism. It’s a favourite amongst travellers who want access to beautiful lakes, palaces and old-city streets.
It’s also ideal for young travellers who don’t want to spend all day touring monuments. Lake Pichola, café culture, local artisans and breezy rooftop restaurants provide a chance to relax after a day exploring Udaipur’s streets and colourful markets.
Hampi
