Voice technology in India has historically worked best in English. From Kolkata to Karnataka, accents and code-switching to regional languages often stumped digital assistants. Now, several companies are training new AI voice technologies to understand Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi, Odia and more.
This could open up the digital world to millions who are comfortable with smartphones but prefer not to use English-language interfaces.
Why Indian Language Voice AI Matters
India already has four international language rankings on its own (English, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu). Add in the many local languages and dialects across the country, and you’ve got millions of people who speak one language at home, another at work, and perhaps English when conducting business online.
Ideally, a voice assistant should understand this fluid code-switching rather than forcing users to communicate only in formal Hindi or English.
It should understand when a user says something like, “Kal ka weather check karo” or “Mujhe Kolkata se Darjeeling ka itinerary bana do,” without registering incorrect inputs or asking the speaker to repeat themself.
Indian language technology platform Sarvam or Bhashini is working to create more infrastructure for speech recognition, translation, text-to-speech and optical character recognition across these languages.

Vocal assistants could allow patients to describe symptoms, book appointments, ask questions and understand doctor’s notes or medicine instructions aloud.
Healthcare-focused voice technology will be especially helpful to older patients and those who have trouble typing.
Agriculture
Farmers could inquire about weather forecasts, crop illnesses, government benefits, and market rates without having to sift through poorly translated government websites.
Language shouldn’t be a barrier to vital information in rural farming communities.
Education
Indian language speech technology can help children (and adults) translate lessons, hear foreign words pronounced correctly, and interact using their native language. Teachers could use it to transcribe lectures and generate course material.
Travel tips and information
Ai voice assistant might let you ask for directions, translate street signs, book rides, or find places to eat that’re specific to Chennai, Bangalore, Mangalore or Kolkata, when traveling, especially if you don’t speak English. Language-driven voice AI could make digital services less intimidating for first-time technology users.
Challenges for Indian Language Voice AI
- Accents and colloquial speech are major barriers for Indian language AI. Someone recording a sentence in a studio will sound very different from a crowded marketplace in Chennai, or while sitting on a Mumbai local train.
- Background noise is another hurdle. Voice commands may not always work in noisy environments.
