Why Young Indians Are Feeling Tired All the Time: 7 Everyday Reasons You Shouldn’t Ignore

It’s normal to feel tired at the end of a long day. But if you’re waking up tired, finding it hard to focus at work or college, and reaching for that second cup of tea or coffee more often than not, it might be time to take a closer look at your daily habits.

Many young Indians spend long hours in front of screens, eat at irregular hours, get poor sleep, and face pressure at work or school. For the majority, these factors add up over time without us realising. But constant tiredness shouldn’t always be chalked up to ‘being busy.’

These are seven of the most common causes of feeling drained. #

You Are Not Sleeping Enough

Scrolling late into the night, reading work messages, and watching one more episode can soon become habits that push your bedtime well past midnight. Most adults need at least seven hours of sleep per night. Less than that on a regular basis will leave you feeling tired and impact your ability to concentrate during the day.

Your Sleep Schedule Keeps Changing

Even if you get enough hours some nights, going to bed at 11 pm one night and 2 am another will make waking up feel like a struggle. Having a relatively steady bedtime and wake-up time helps your body keep its internal clock set to the right time.

Your Meals Are Irregular

Few things are worse than skipping breakfast, waiting too long for lunch, and living off several cups of tea and biscuits. While any meal is better than none, eating regularly will help keep your energy levels up. Meals that include protein, whole grains, vegetables, fruit, and healthy fats will provide longer-lasting energy than snacking on sugary foods.

You’re Dehydrated

Not drinking enough water can lead to tiredness, headaches, and difficulty focusing. This can be especially important in the warmer months in India. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times so you can sip throughout the day rather than waiting until you’re parched to take a big gulp.

You Sit Too Much

Whether you have a desk job or spend hours studying, sitting for long periods of time is increasingly common. Regular exercise might seem like the opposite of what you need when you’re tired. But some physical activity can actually give you more energy. Go for a walk, ride your bike to work, hit the gym, or just get up and move around for a few minutes during long stretches of sitting.

You’re Stressed

Sometimes our bodies feel tired even when we haven’t spent the day doing manual labour. If you’re constantly thinking about deadlines, bills, exams, anxious about your grades or job performance, dealing with relationship issues, or checking work emails at night, your brain might not be switching off.

If stress and worry are impacting your ability to sleep, eat, concentrate, or function day-to-day, take it seriously rather than brushing it off as “just stressed out”.

There’s an Underlying Medical Issue

Of course, sometimes tiredness isn’t caused by poor sleep or lifestyle factors. Iron deficiency, anaemia, thyroid issues, B12 deficiency, diabetes, sleep disorders, and many other illnesses can lead to fatigue.

That doesn’t mean that every person who complains of tiredness needs exhaustive blood work. But if you’re constantly tired for no obvious reason, or you feel tired and are also experiencing other symptoms such as unintended weight loss or gain, shortness of breath, dizziness, feeling very thirsty, heart palpitations, or significant disruptions to your sleep schedule, make an appointment with your doctor.

When To Take Your Tiredness Seriously

If you’ve felt tired for several weeks, even though you’re getting enough sleep (most of the time), eating decently, and getting some exercise, it’s okay to listen to your body. Cutting down on caffeine won’t hurt.

You might need to slow down — or investigate further.
