How to Reserve and Change Your WhatsApp Username: Everything You Need to Know in 2026

Good news for 3 billion WhatsApp users worldwide. Now you can keep your phone number private and just share your username for messaging. Instead of sharing a personal phone number, users will be able to share a unique username, making conversations more private and convenient.

The social media most used messaging platform is preparing one of its biggest privacy-focused updates yet. As per the latest announcement in June 2026 from the Meta-owned messaging platform, Whatsapp has started rolling out username reservations, allowing users to claim a unique username before the feature becomes widely available. Although this usernames reserve feature is not yet fully active, one officially launched – eligible users can reserve one and begin using it later this year.

The update is a big change in how people connect on WhatsApp, especially with businesses.

What is a WhatsApp Username?

Until now, a phone number has been the only way to connect with someone on WhatsApp. The new username system will let people create their own unique handle which another user can search and send a message to without ever seeing their phone number. This feature is useful for the creators, freelancers, professionals, small businesses and anyone that does not wish to disclose their mobile number but be available for contact within the app.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username

If the feature has reached your account, follow these steps:

  1. Update WhatsApp to the latest version
  2. Next Open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
  3. Tap your Account (Android) / Profile setting (IOS).
  4. Look for the new/create Username option.
  5. Enter your preferred username.
  6. WhatsApp will instantly check whether it is available or will suggest the available variations.
  7. Once accepted, save it to reserve the username.

Please note: If you don’t see the Username option yet, don’t worry. Meta is rolling out the feature in phases, so it may take some time before it appears on all devices.

Can You Change Your Username Later?

Yes. WhatsApp will allow users to change their username whenever they want, provided the new one is available.

Username Restrictions & Rules You Should Know

To maintain authenticity and prevent impersonation, WhatsApp has introduced a few guidelines:

  • Usernames will let users chat with new people, businesses, and groups without revealing their phone numbers.
  • There will be no public directory or recommendation system for discovering users unlike Facebook or Instagram.
  • Some should know your exact username to connect.
  • The platform is introducing an optional username key feature. This means that even if someone knows your username, they will need this key before they message you.

Other Rules to know

  • Every username must be unique.
  • Matching names from Facebook/ Instagram can be claimed where eligible
  • Usernames cannot begin with “www.”
  • They cannot end with a domain such as “.com” or “.net.”
  • Only letters, numbers, periods, and underscores are expected to be allowed.
  • Usernames must meet whatsapp’s community and safety standards.
  • If your preferred username has already been claimed, you’ll need to choose another variation.

Takeaway:

WhatsApp is evolving into a communication platform that prioritizes privacy. The username feature allows users to connect without exposing their phone numbers, reducing unwanted contact and making interactions safer.
